I Was Reading This Article The Other Day… (15.10.2012)

My weekend wasn’t too bad, though I really didn’t get up to anything terribly eventful. I had family visit and I ate a great deal of ice cream (I tried the new Connoisseur Murray River Salted Caramel – though I thought it could have used more caramel, it was still good enough for me to eat the whole thing in one go.) I also went to the movies (I dont do that very often) and hennaed my hair which has made it a nicer, darker shade of brown, shiny-ed it up like crazy and left it smelling of twigs and spices. Really, I felt a bit under the weather both physically and emotionally (yay lady cycles!) and I actually spent a good deal of time lying on my bed in my undies watching Six Feet Under and Buffy and working my way through whole packets of rice crackers. Excitement galore!

Today’s attack of the Monday Mornings was a particularly nasty one. Woke up to a headbutt (entirely accidental!) couldn’t find my headphones, ripped a hole in my 2nd favourite pair of jeans (I ripped a hole in my 1st favourite pair of jeans about a month ago – I have still not recovered),  had to go back after leaving for the station as I’d left my lunch at home and even though I DID go back, I still forgot my Kindle. Not insurmountable issues, but irritating none-the-less when one takes into account the afore-mentioned hormone-palooza I’m currently wading through.

I did manage to read some pretty good articles over the last seven days, though.

In the sphere of lady-stuff, here’s a transcript of a speech given by Anne Summers about the harassment received by the Prime Minister Julia Gillard. It’s pretty long and decidedly NSFW due to language and somewhat offensive images. Did you enjoy her smack-down of Abbott’s arrogant, smirking visage last week? I know I did. Thursday was also the International Day of the Girl, and I found a link to an old article on child brides that was pretty heartbreaking (Via Nat Geo.)

Dig on science-type things? This article from the Guardian talks about how the death of a species is also killing mythology. Did you watch the Red Bull Stratos jump? I missed the live coverage! Damn having to sleep! Anyway, there was plenty to read about it this morning (via BBC).

Got culture? Here’s a great piece from Lindy West (via Jezebel) about the whole right/left/conservative/liberal debate and how she’s not having a bar of it. This article from another Gawker Media unmasks a particularly nasty internet cretin and is a pretty nice piece of investigative journalism.

Lastly, in a category I can only describe as “WTF?”: Doctors in the US are dishing out pills to help kids mired in the failing school system (NYTimes.)
