I had an interesting weekend – I spent Saturday doing mundane things, writing, getting my house cleaned and things sorted because on Sunday I travelled down to Sydney and spent three hours having my back-piece tattoo worked on! I knew I’d be useless for anything besides stuffing my face with pizza and lying on the floor wrapped in a towel afterwards, so I made sure I had everything I needed done all sorted before-hand.

This was taken partway through the session, just prior to me cursing the world and everything in it in a pain-induced torrent.
Actually, the session wasn’t too bad – almost totally bearable! My tattoo artist was down from Queensland and working out of a really beautiful studio. He concentrated on getting all the scales coloured in (we reckon that he filled in around 250-300 individual scales!) My lower back was quite intense, but then he moved onto my right butt-cheek, which was a more ‘padded’ area and not nearly as bad. I even managed to carry on a conversation for the last forty minutes or so!

As always, seeing as it is Monday, here’s a few things I’ve been reading of late.

Amazing gif of the Russian meteor. I found it on Tumblr, unsure of the source.
From Planetary.org, here’s some info about the meteor that fell over Russia this week. This great long read from io9 is about Elyn Saks and her experience of living with schizophrenia. From Scientific American, this piece is about how synthetic marijuana has been shown to cause kidney damage. From the same source, an interesting article on the links between agriculture, rats and tooth decay. Also, check out this piece on the sequencing of the Bonobo genome.
Lastly, here’s a thing from io9 on the quickest way to make a person lose interest in their hobby: pay them to do it. Finally, from Daily Life, an opinion article from Clementine Ford about standing up to haters online.
Read anything great this week? Think I’m crazy for tattooing a big dragon claw on my butt? Let me know in the comments!

Yes to the crazy, for a dragon claw on the butt, but only because I’m a coward. One long tat on my arm was all I could handle. Yours is awesome!!
I pretend to everyone that I’m some totally tough tattooed chick but really I hate getting tattooed. Love HAVING them, hate GETTING them.
One was enough for me, but I’m such a vanilla middle class suburban mom, that people thought I was going off the deep end. I love my tattoo, though and can understand the pleasure of having them.
Ha! I can imagine that people thought it was a little odd. Me, I’ve always been a bit odd, so everyone expects it of me…it’s tough to live up to sometimes (I’m lying, it really isn’t!) I can’t wait til this is finished….but then again, I’ll probably just start on another one…
Thanks so much for the link to the awesome Clementine Ford article. Loved it.
I’m new to your blog but looking forward to visiting again. And the dragon on your back is amazing.
I’m glad you liked it, Ms Ford puts out only the most awesome words. Thanks for stopping by!
